Title: Simulating the environmental impact of restaurant operations
The team won the 2nd prize at the CORS/VISUAL8 Student Simulation Competition 2008 with this project.

Abstract:

The simulation study describes modeling of improved store design to help meeting greener goals at newly planned locations. A fast-food restaurant chain wants to reduce the environmental impact of their operations while maintaining the companys high level of customer service. Resulting designs are ranked based on customer service level and environmental impact (defined as the average quantity of emissions produced by customer vehicles using parking lot and a drive-through lane). The simulation model that we developed provides an optimal solution to meet these goals.

The team won the 2nd prize at the CORS/VISUAL8 Student Simulation Competition 2008 with this project. The competition was sponsored by the VISUAL8 Corporation, a market leader in industrial simulation solutions. They provided the problems and the simulation software (SIMUL8), and also took part in the evaluation of submissions.
